Well, I've had some sort of problem for about 7 years now, starting when I was ~18 yrs old.  It started out as severe muscle tension, mostly the trapezius muscle, but also around my neck, the base of my skull, above my ears, and the tips of my eyebrows.  I've maybe always been a tense, anxious person, but I don't remember being in pain until this point.  The most troublesome spot is my left trapezius, at my shoulder.  The muscles are knotted up constantly, I absolutely cannot relax them.  I beg people for massages (and have them practically punching on it, it's so tense), and it feels good while it's happening, but no long-term relief.  The first doctors I saw said "it's just stress" and gave me antidepressants.

So, after several years of this, I started having pain in my spine.  It constantly feels like it needs to pop, at numerous places in between my shoulder blades and up, and I'm constantly twisting around trying to get it to pop, which is a relief until I notice the next spot, all day long.  Also some of the vertebrae feel like they're rubbing each other, a sharp pain.  My original thoughts were that since my left muscles were so much tighter, it was pulling my spine out of alignment.  However, I've seen 3 chiropractors who said it's spinal problems causing muscle problems (even though I told them it was muscle 1st spine 2nd).  So, I payed lots of money to all these chiropractors, and none of them helped me, so I've given up that route.  I saw an orthopedist, who just told me to use a pillow and do yoga (I can't use a pillow b/c of the pain and I do some of the yoga that helps my back).  I saw a neurologist who did several tests on me and told me he can't help me.  My new doctor (or PA actually) thought it might be magnesium deficiency, but just got the results and they're normal.  Also, my x-rays showed that my spine curves to the right in the lumbar region, there is no cervical curve where there's supposed to be one, and there are several subluxations.

So, I don't know if anyone will take the time to read this, or if they have any advice for me if they do...but I thought maybe it'd be nice to talk to someone else who has something wrong w/ them but can't find out what it is.

Im sorry youre in pain. I, too, have severe aches and pains especially around my back and neck area.  It always feels like it needs to be popped but it feels more like a tired/tight muscle or something. I spent time at the chiropractor and when that didnt work I went back to my general doctor. I was diagnosed with firbomyalgia and put on cymbalta. It helps a little with the pain and when combined with advil, it seems to take some of it away for a while. I know thats not ideal, and thus why I am looking for a more liveable answer, but at least it makes it bearable in the meantime.  Maybe you could talk to your doctor about that...just a thought.
Good luck!

mbp....  the only thing I can think to contribute right now is the fact that chiropractors are not experts on human physiology, though a few may be able to twist vertabrae in a way that helps a few people.   Chiropractors were officially licensed on the assumption that it would be easier to regulate these possibly questionable practitioners within a similar legal framework to that used to regulate regular doctors.   They don't possess detailed knowledge of human anatomy or disease.   It's possible for someone on the outside of things (as chiropractors seem to be) to come up with original treatments that help, but it's a bit of a long shot.

Taylor-

Well, I am so happy to hear from someone who is suffering from a similar ailment (not happy you're suffering, just happy you reached out to me).  The way you describe the "need to pop" feeling and the tired/tight muscles sound very much like what I feel.  So, you are the very 1st person I've found that might have the same problem (whatever it is), and that's at least encouraging that it's not in my head.

If you don't mind my prying, how old were you when you started having these problems?  I had considered fibromyalgia before, but then when I read that the diagnosis had to do with "tender spots" I sorta discarded the idea, b/c I don't have any even slightly tender spots.  However, I have not seen a specialist or been "tested."  So, is that how you were diagnosed, by the tender spots?  And it was not by a specialist?  Do you think that's what you have?

So far the PA I see will only try me on NSAIDS but not of them have worked.  I will ask her about fibromyalgia (again) and about cymbalta.  I will let you know if I find out anything about my problem since our symptoms are so similar, and I'd appreciate it if you'd do the same.  I wish you luck in finding a better solution.  Thank you very much for reaching out to me.

JASON SNR-

Thank you for your information.  I had been very reluctant to see a chiropractor...I sorta had this crazy conspiracy theory that they sorta mess you up in a way that you have to see them for the rest of your life...b/c everyone I know who goes to one has been for years.  I just got so desperate that I eventually tried it.  One of them actually did really hurt me so I only saw him twice. I have now definitely given up on them, though I'm still paying on the bills.  I wish I had known what you just told me before I wasted my time and money, but oh well.  I do now have less faith in their "diagnoses."  I need to find an orthopedist that will listen to me, but I'm swimming in medical bills so that will have to wait.

Do you know much about DOs?  Are they sorta like chiropractors?
