When all else fails, play dead!

When I go to the GP next week, I'll ask for a letter stating that my service dog does help me to balance, he carries my property(he's my big brown handbag on 4 feet!) so the council will know he is required, and so I can wave the letter at anyone who wants to throw me out of anywhere because he's a 'pet'.

Here, you have to get a letter from your doctor to show the council so they'll allow free registration of the service dog.

When all else fails, play dead!

Word of warning - One complaint can destroy a service dog.

Kaos was snoozing next to me on the train. It was about 2pm, so the train wasn't crowded. There were 5 or 6 other passengers in the carriage. A kid got bored of sitting still, so he started running up and down the corridor. He ran all the way down the train, his mother completely ignoring him. He ran toward us, Kaos stood up. He ran past me at full speed and had Kaos standing on his back feet, the dog was sandwiched between the wall, the seat and the advancing child.
The kid started waving his arms at Kaos(not just his hands, his arms), so Kaos nipped the kid(didn't leave a mark on him) and dashed around me to hide.
The kid started screaming at the top of his lungs, the mother started screaming at me too. The police were waiting at the next station. They talked to everyone for an hour. A policeman came to me and said I'm not the first person they tried doing this to, the boy's sister was in hospital because of a bite from another service dog they'd baited, that dog was put down. There was no evidence that my dog had bitten, but the woman was sticking to her story, so it had to go on my dog's record. He's on warning status, one more stuck up snot who uses kids to destroy lives and he'll be barred from all public transport.

I Will Be Diagnosed !

I'm so sorry this has happened to you and Kaos  aggressive
This happens in everyday life with kids and pets, parents should be more watchful on how their kids treat pets, pulling ears, tails, hair etc just drives me insane, all kids should be monitored and I for one won't tolerate brats annoying my dogs, all people actually (not just the kids) are not allowed out in the yard with my dogs unless I'm there watching.

So sorry New I bet your annoyed  aggressive

Annoyed doesn't even come close.
Kaos is trained to put up with kids yanking ears and being a bit rough without realising it, like a toddler. We couldn't be prepared for this kid running up, bullying him into a corner and aggressively waving arms. I'm very proud of Kaos, any other dog would've snapped and bitten, he was very controlled in his reaction.
I'm training a service dog for a girl in Edithvale, he's temporarily taken over as my service dog, at least until Kaos is accredited by my trainer again, to prove that he's not dangerous so I can take him out.

I deal with stupid people like this all the time. People REALLY need to educate themselves about ettiquite around dogs you dont know! that and parents need to supervise and discipline when it is witnessed. I have some horrible brats that used to throw rocks at my dog while outside, they would kick the fence, squirt him with a squirt gun etc... the day we finally had it we had always asked them NICELY to stop, then after the third time that did. My husband went outside starting yelling at them and swearing at them. The mother comes out and starts defending her children, said my dog should be put down and that my husband should go back to Iraq and Die!!!  aggressive aggressive aggressive  NOW I am sorry but if the children were MINE and I had been told they were throwing rocks at a dog that was in his yard. I would have grounded them for one, and two told them they were lucky they did not get bit and if they would have it was probably their faults!!!!! But thats me. Whats wrong with people these days... ? Confused

I've talked to the police. The police lady was very sympathetic, she said 2 guide dogs have been treated badly by the same people TODAY. She said she can't remove the complaint on Kaos' record, so I asked her to put the complaints on the mum & kid's record. She checked her records, the complaints had gone on the dog's records, but not the woman's record. I asked her to note the dates on the record too, so they can see this is a habit of hers and maybe not come down on the next dog like bricks.
We found 8 other dogs that had been her victims before I left. I can't clear Kaos of this crap, but maybe I can make life easier for their next victim.

No idea. Just because her life's miserable doesn't give her the right to make everyone else's life the same.

I now own a HUGE black walkable handbag...I was originally asked to train him for zoe, a 9yr old with several disablities(ADHD, epilepsy, brain damage...). Her family gave me the puppy, and promised they'd pay me huge amounts for his equipment, upkeep and training. I told them that I'd need to keep an eye on him with Zoe for at least 2 weeks to make sure he was good for her and he wouldn't just freak out with her.
I was told just over a week ago by email that they had received a fully trained dog from Assistance Dogs Australia, so Frood is no longer needed. They said they can't have him back because they'd lose the service dog.
That's it. No payment, no nothing.
His name is now Horse(he's huge!), I never really liked calling him Frood.

I can't get him an assistance dog pass either. They list 7 organizations that the dog must be trained by, which is discriminating against self trained dogs. They also 'require' your medical information, which they have no right to even ask for.

Hi New28 :)

What do you need the pass for? There are a few public transport companies that 'claim' all assistance dog users need to apply for the company's assistance dog pass in order to travel, but that's just their policy and not the law. I was looking into travelling on Melbourne public transport recently and was told by the company that I had to apply for their assistance dog pass (and the forms to apply for it were really quite invasive.) I did some further research and spoke to people who specialise in disability laws and was told that many public transport companies can't require anyone to have their company's pass, and if they refused travel to a disabled person with their trained assistance dog they could get into huge amounts of trouble legally. This was before the DDA ammendments came in.

In many cases it's just the companies trying to add extra requirements that aren't required by law, and therefore aren't required. I don't think I'll be getting a pass that isn't required by law, because the more assistance dog users that do, the more problems assistance dog users without the pass (that isn't required anyway) will have. It might make life easier short term for those who have the pass, but in the bigger picture it's just making life harder for them and for other assistance dog users that come after them. I don't want to give companies the impression that they can put extra conditions of travel on disabled passengers even when the laws says otherwise.

Those are just my thoughts :)

You're required to muzzle pet dogs on trains too, but I haven't seen a dog yet that was muzzled for train travel.
The pass required service dogs to carry a pass, guide dogs and hearing dogs and guide dogs in training don't need it, which is also wrong. All service dogs are to be seen as medical equipment, regardless of the jobs they do. Do they require passes for walking canes, but not for oxygen tanks? It's ridiculous! Guide dogs in training can be trained to ride public transport, but other dogs in training can't be, this is pathetic.

As for asking for medical information, they have no business even asking. Is everyone asked for their medical history before they get on buses just to make sure they're not carrying contagens?

For service dogs I'm told you're not actually required to have a pass just because it's the policy of the company. You're only required to have it if the law requires it. And you're right, public transport companies currently have no right to your medical information just so that you can travel with your service dog, as far as I've been told.

Which organisation is your service dog with and what does he do for you? The organisation should be able to advise you on this.

He's self trained.
1. He counter balances for transfers
2. He helps me balance while walking
3. He pulls my manual wheelchair up small inclines with my help, so he does it slowly
4. He steadies my nerves at the station where I was mugged.
5. He holds lift doors for me to drive my electric wheelchair in.
6. He enters my home first when we get home(my neighbor has entered my home and crept up behind me, while I was home, so he's known for doing this crap)

I'm currently teaching him to pick up things that I drop and to carry my coffee mug to the sink when it's empty(his bowl's metal and most dogs hate grabbing metal)
