choking and fluids falling out of my mouth  (Read 2560 times)

This is fairly new in the past month has gotten worse which is annoying. That really just sums up my whole undiagnosed mystery in a nutshell is... Annoying that and tiring.

So recently in the last month I notice I am choking alot and food and liquids are coming out my nose, I also notice I awaken when i am just about to fall asleep from choking on drool I guess. Then when I eat soup I put the spoon to my mouth but I notice it keeps falling out of my mouth so it ends up all on my chin and chest. Same thing happens with drinks.. its like the expression "you have a hole in your lip" because you get it all over yourself. That is me. Also notice my voice is very weak and sometimes talking takes to much effort and energy and talking wears me out on occasion. I truly feel that what is going on is possible nueromuscular. I need to see a new neurologist!

When all else fails, play dead!

Please explain, choking or retching?

With the soup, don't put the spoon in your mouth, bring the spoon to your lips and slurp from there. Sure, is funny, makes funny noises, but you don't get it all over yourself...been there, done that.
As for drinks, try to wrap your bottom lip around your bottom teeth, then drink. it hurts the first few times, but that's how I drink cold drinks.

I am actually choking while eating or drinking, I will be swallowing it and its like I am not swallowing, the mechinism of swallowing seems to stop and so I start coughing and it sometimes comes out my nose.

Thanks for the soup eating and liquid drinking suggestions!

Told You It Was Not All In My Head!

Sweetie you need a new Neuro, and you need one NOW. This is not good, and it can't wait.

If you need help with a ride to see Dr Reif, I will do what I can to help you.

I do like Dr. Reif but she is convinced I have epilepsy and need the epileptic drugs for it even though she assured me I wont be having any grand mal seizures anytime soon if ever, however if she is right and I do its so mild and I rather deal with the episodes I get from it that only last a few hours rather than feel like a total vegetable while on anti siezure meds all day... they are awful!! I am so sensitive to medications as well so meds are always tough on me. I can't seem to get past the epilepsy stuff with her, she also seems to think the muscle twitches have to do with it but I would like to just get a second opinion about different neuro muscular disorders... so... I made an appt at Swedish with the neuro science dept.... well actually I have not made an appt yet. I am waiting for the new appt coordinator to call me back but I plan to.

Ahh Ok - well if you need any help, let me know, even if its just someone to go with.  I am taking two anti - convulsants, so I know what you mean. I have to take them both at night. Gabapentin and Tegretol are mine that I am taking. And I am STILL twitching and jerking - and I know its not seizures. My son used to take Trileptal and it made him very woozy.
Huge Hug Huge Hug Huge Hug for you!

man.. *sigh* my esaphagus is where I have the most troubles and make the most complaints for the past ten years. so I have had two endoscopies both found to be.. yep you guessed it. Normal. I had also a gastric emptying scan which the conclusion on that was that I empty my food at a Low-Normal time but the low was still in the normal range.... soooo.... no help for me there either. This is why I feel its something nuero muscular deep down. All my muscles are going haywire, weakening, twitching and spasming and these muscles include the digestive tract. *sigh* getting a nuero or any doctor to listen.... that is the real challenge. I have had no testing regarding any neuro muscular problems or disorders yet. I am working my way up though. Made an appt. with a swedish hospital neuro for July 9th. Hope she listens.

An alternative option not sure if this is something that would help diagnose  Question
You've mentioned muscle problems, have you looked into Applied Kinesiology

I'm open minded too  Smile
My Doctor said maybe I should give it a go.........you never know what could be figured out by trying anyway.
But lack of funds, and now being pregnant I've not tried. But I will eventually  Wink

My mum had something like that - the choking/drooling etc. Ended up being some type of reflux, but not like the normal symptoms, she got it fixed, i will ask her what she had done, they did something or other.
My oldest often chokes whiles drinking, we always say there are bones in the water.

I do have GERD/Acid reflux.. I know that sometimes it can cause coughing and choking. I have been taking a proton pump inhibitor for a few years now, it helps the actual acid but not with motility and choking etc and fullness feeling in my throat so.. anything you find out would be helpful! Because even with meds I am still quite uncomfortable.
