I am 30 years old. In August 2008, I went to the ER with severe pain in the upper left quadrant of my stomach right under my rib cage. I have a lump under my last left rib and it is tender/bruised. They ran several test, gave me some pain medicine and sent me home. The CT scan was normal, the x-rays normal, the abdominal ultrasound showed a small gallbladder polyp and everything else normal. I have been to my regular doctor, gynecologist, gastro specialist, oncologist. They did a endoscopy, colonoscopy, Hydrogen breath test(check for a gluten intolerance), and a gastric emptying study (delay in digestion test), CA-125 (check for ovarian cancer), pelvic ultrasound (check for ovarian cancer or cyst), Celiac test (check for sprue intolerance), Thyroid test, blood chemistry, fecal and urine study. They cannot figure it out. They say it must be severe IBS. But I was diagnosed with IBS 10 years ago and never had these problems. I would suffer from stomach cramps and constipation. How can IBS go from that to my stomach bloating so much that I feel and look like I am six months pregnant overnight. I have different pant sizes in my closet for when I am bloated and when I'm not. I gained 20 pounds that first month. Now I have gained a total of 40 pounds to date. I went from a 10/12 to a 16/18. Now when my stomach bloats the 16's will not fit. I also feel pressure on my bladder when my stomach swells. I am highly depressed. I am disgusted with my looks. Now it is almost summer and I am ashamed to wear a swimsuit. My co-workers and family cannot understand how devastating this can be. Not to mention frustrating, when you pay doctor co-pays left and right and get no answers. One of my doctor's said it was a mystery diagnosis....that was not helpful. Have you heard of the small intestine telescoping into the large intestine? I have had two people tell me they seen a story about that and the person seemed to have the symptoms as we have....Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated. I am thankful I found this blog website. I was starting to think no one else ever went from normal to looking six month pregnant ten minutes.

Oh girly, I feel for you. When I had my daughter, I stayed as fat looking. For my height, I'm on the dangerously obese side, add in my weight and I'm on the light side of healthy weight. My skin has no elasticity, when streched it doesn't bounce back, at all, so I now look constantly pregnant. I was size 14, now I'm at 22, I'm about a month shy of 29 too :(

I have to wait for my doctor to call with the results of my ultrasound. It is always a waiting game. Have you ever heard of a HIDA scan? Someone I talked to said he was having the same problems as me and had tons of test for six years then finally a doctor did this test. They found that adhesions were behind his galbladder and attaching to his liver. Once his galbladder was removed the problems went away.....Oh, wouldn't that be nice?

The ultrasound was normal, the HIDA scan was normal.....now I am stuck again. The gastro doctor at Presbyterian gave me some antibiotics for bad bacteria (H Pylori) in the intestines. I take them for 10 days then start taking Align (good bacteria) --which will be in 2 days. My stomach is not as swollen and the pain is not as bad. But I still feel uncomfortable and my weight is the same. I am still frustrated and wish I had an answer.
Anybody have any suggestions?

Hello, it has been awhile since I posted anything. I wanted to update you on my status. I had every test imaginable, including allergy test and a chromosome for swelling blood test since my last post. But I believe after keeping a record of my food when I swell, I have diagnosed myself. I believe I am allergic "highly sensitive" to Mono sodium Glutamate AKA MSG. I already knew I had a problem with another toxin, aspartame. So, this may be a problem for others. The only thing is that MSG is in almost everything. Especially restaurant chicken, ranch, Parmesan, and especially Japanese and Chinese food. I got really sick after eating Japanese and then got a case of vertigo, nausea, on top of the swelling. The sodium causes fluid build, the MSG itself causes my intestines to become inflamed and swell. They use so many different names for preservatives such as "natural flavoring" so you cannot be sure if it is really MSG or not.
