Tired..

my doctor put me on pristiq last month for depression.  i kinda had an emotional breakdown in his office and wouldnt let me leave without agreeing to go on them.  anyway i've been having weird side effects,  first when is my whole body seems to become less sensitive to touch.  not really numb, just, dampened i guess? its feels weird.  other things are the blue fingers, blood pressure has gone up, and muscle twitching / tremors are more frequent.  what's odd though is none of these symptoms are on the list of side effects, except maybe blood pressure but even that isnt listed.

what's wrong with me.... :'(

I Will Be Diagnosed !

Antidepressants can do all sorts of wacky things (and ones not written in stone) I tried over 6, but each one had terrible side-effects so I refused to take them. I became more depressed, dis-connected with society, numb, sick, tired, angry, and lots of other awful things, I refuse to try other brands, I just can't take them.

Sorry can't help with this one Jas.
Besides the effects you mentioned are they helping the depression? Way to early usually to tell, so maybe you need abit longer to feel the effects.
If they are starting to worry you can you ring you Doctor ?

as far as the depression goes, yes it's helping me not to jump off a bridge so thats good.

and i've been on them before and they didnt help.  but this type is new i guess and has helped me.  but, side effects suck.. and i know it's only temporary until they figure out whats wrong with me.

Very true Jas.
I guess similar to the tramadol I'm taking. Doctor is not so happy about long term use, but it gives me a small life (I can get out of bed most days while on the medication, without I really am bed ridden) I give myself a hard time about these drugs more then anyone, only because I have been through withdrawals previously and know what's in store, the longer I'm on them the worse it will be.
But YOUR RIGHT must remember why we are on these medications in the first place  :)

Side effects are becoming more prominent.  it seems to be changing my body sensations.  some areas are kind of numb, others have become extremely sensitive, to a point where vibrations from a car, or even clothes touching them makes me focus on them.  its rather annoying, and quite bothersome.  also its making it harder to sleep sometimes.  and just a general feeling of being drugged.  i dont know if its illness or medicine but my fingers still hurt and i've noticed significant weakness in my hands.  it's suddenly very hard to open bottles and stuff.  i want off this medication. i dont like it.  not at all.

It's good that you've given it a chance, and have been open-minded about the drug despite problems, but there is a point where you have to decide for yourself whether it's doing harm.   You must not be intimidated by the aura of a doctor's supposed expertise (which is limited) that you yield all judgment even if going through very bad side effects.

It was a big epiphany for me, when I was seeing a headache specialist and had a horrific reaction to one of his drugs, absolutely unbearable pain... and when my family called him for a solution, he just insisted I stay on the drug, in a sort of offhand way.  I woke up at that instant, and there was no going back for me.   This doctor was really only concerned with whether his orders were being obeyed.   Then I thought back and realized many of the previous doctors had had the same attitude, but I was not willing to recognize it before.  I had yielded my judgment.   That's what we're "supposed" to do.

Up to a point, that's valid.   They have knowledge we don't.   You're the one who gets hurt if things go wrong, though, and even if the MD seems like a decent enough person, he/she will never have that gut-level motivation for self-preservation that you have.   The last word has to be yours, and you're more than competent enough to decide if you're being hurt.

There is definitely a great deal of harm that psychiatric drugs can do, even if they also help people sometimes.   MDs won't tell you this, you'll only hear it from people who have been harmed.   Anti-psychotics (or "major tranquilizers"... a misleading euphemism) are by far the worst, anti-depressants are somewhat less risky but there is still major risk that isn't listed amongst side-effects, and tranquilizers (or "minor tranquilizers") are less risky still, but there can also be problems with these.

Some people do well with these drugs, but they are prescribed too indiscriminately, resulting in all sorts of great and horrible experiences.

I don't like this business of 'not letting you leave' without the drug.

I totally relate Jason, Doctors seem to become rather pissed off when you tell them the drug didn't work or the side effects are to god dame awful. I was always told "you will become accustomed to that feeling" and it wont bother you. But who wants to feel sick all the time, or detached from the world while taking them, or drugged out all the time...

Jas if you are not seeing any benefits for you pain levels, and the drugs are making you feel crap, you have every right to say "NO"

You do, jasonsonson etc.... but don't expect the doctor to know you have that right.  Handle it carefully.   Be diplomatic.

Jason-son...have you read up on Serotonin?

Your body makes so much of it, most of which goes to your digestive tract, but a small amount of it goes to your brain, helps to regulate processes and manage pain. But one that has a daily fight of pain on their hands, your body depletes this supply, and ya run "low". Which then can give the person fatigue, and depression among other things.

I'm sure your doctor is trying to alleviate your symptoms. But there are all sorts of side-effects as you know.
Possibly you could take a "natural" supplement of Serotonin to help your body.

No doctor here by any means....just offering a suggestion!!

I take a really "low" dose of Seratonin, in fact my dose is so low, that my prescription is the smallest they make and I have to cut it in half and take it.

I have had back pain for 11 years, and have taken ALL types of pain meds and anti-depressants.  This LOW dose I am on, actually helps my pain and my mood so much, that all I have to take when I am hurting is a BC powder or 800 MG. Ibuprofren. And this is years of taking zanax, hydrocodone, Skelaxin, Tramadol, and others, but no more, I just take this low dose, it may not be a cure-all. but I am thankful my doc thought it thru, and gave me a "small" daily dose to help me rid myself of taking a handful of pills on a daily basis just to get thru the day.

I'm rambling again........... Big Grin

Sorry.... :angel

I could never get any idea what serotonin did.  I thought it induced sleep for awhile but that wasn't really it.   I wonder how it deals with pain, since I doubt it's like some pain reliever in any ordinary sense.   Regulates processes.... by making the timing of muscles or glands operate at certain times?

Dopamine must be something that's very much impaired in me, but serrtotonin seemed like the other possibility.

I've got to get help finding a doctor even though I don't live near anyone I know online.  Did I bring this up already?   The internet should make it possible somehow.

I'm so incredibly utterly empty and blank.   I didn't mean to take over the thread.

Jason............ramble all you want!!! Thumbs

Are there any services for handicapped/seniors/disabled to help them get to and from their doctors appointment??

I know Nashville has that service, you call and they help get you in and to your doctors appointment, and await for your apointment to be over and take you home.

If you want, give me you "exact" location (city, state) and I will be happy to go on-line and look for info for you in your area........... Smile

I have an appointment with a psychaitrist on Thursday. I've been taking Effexor, but it doesn't seem to be doing much for me.

Thanks zophistreet.   I can get to MDs by taxi, the state pays.  The problem is searching for a new MD who would be accepting of my situation and limitations and respectful and I would hope at least somewhat familiar with some of what's happening to me.   Since I had to give up on doing this very hard or impossible task on my own, ever, after decades of disasters, help with searching online is all I can think of, and it's urgent.  I can't go on with no one addressing the neurotransmitter problem most of all.
